On July 16, 2026, Study International published a report that should concern every dining director and enrollment office in the country. The headline: “Halal food on campus: What countries and universities do it best in 2026?” The data underneath it is worse than the headline suggests. A 2024 study cited in the piece found that 43% of US higher education institutions do not serve food suitable for Muslims to consume. A separate study showed Muslim student groups exist at only 28% of US colleges. And the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reported that 53% of Muslim university students in the US faced food insecurity on their campuses.
These are not abstract policy numbers. They are enrollment decisions. When a prospective student — domestic or international — researches a university and cannot find clear, accessible information about whether they can eat safely on campus, that school moves down the list. The global Muslim consumer economy was valued at US$2.43 trillion in 2023 and is projected to reach US$3.36 trillion by 2028. The student segment within that economy is growing, and they are paying attention to which institutions take dietary accommodation seriously.
But halal is only one dimension of the problem.
